Abstract

This article highlights some of the key aspects that laid the ground for the new literary genre of the Gothic novel. Drawing from different interests and traditions, Horace Walpole’s Castle of Otranto (1764) defied rules, critics, and philosophies of the times deliberately, through a prolific tension between past and present, word and image, “fancy” and reality.
