The Unearthed Word. Life and Poetry of Two 16th Century Poetesses: Gaspara Stampa and Isabella Morra

  • Lucia Guidorizzi
Keywords: Gaspara Stampa, Isabella Morra, poetry, women, sixteenth century

Abstract

The article focuses on investigating, through two stories dedicated to the authors, the inner world of Gaspara Stampa and Isabella Morra, their affinities and differences, the places and atmospheres in which their poetry germinated, the difficulties of their era to accept that a woman could express herself autonomously and poetically, expressing her needs and desires. Both born in the first half of the sixteenth century and despite belonging to different worlds and conditions, they express themselves autonomously with respect to the dominant canons. Their mastery in the use of the sonnet, combined with the originality of language, reveal the complexity of their cultural and intellectual formation. This makes the poetic message important for our time too.
