Childless dystopia: The human extinction using a female perspective

  • Cristina Cardia Università di Cagliari

Abstract

Among the many subgenres of dystopian science fiction, there is at least one that seems to be typically female: the childless dystopia. This type of novel finds its premises both in male dystopian literature and, above all, in the reality of the female authors. In fact, since the third wave of feminism in particular, there has been a decline in the birth rate, which is often attributed to women’s new lifestyle. The comparison between the novels under consideration allows us to outline the themes that are common to all the authors, in order to criticize the patriarchal culture and the predetermined role of women in society.
