« With what face can you look up, thou shame of heaven and man?». The monologue to one’s penis from the Satyricon to Fellini Satyricon
Abstract
This paper takes its departure from a specific reference to Petronius’s Satyricon CXXXII, 8-16, a fragment that represents a casual and superb monologue to his penis, a parodic calque of the Odyssey. The aim is to analyse its peculiar position within a “temperature scale” of parody. Subsequently, the aim of the study will be the analysis of the filmic rewriting and rereading of Fellini Satyricon (1969). I will take into account the variations and the techniques chosen to translate the same grade of parody, investigating what is lasting and what is lost in the change of medium.
