Abstract

In 1929 the Venetian orientalist painter Fausto Zonaro, exiled in Sanremo with his family, with whom he had shared the years of consecration as painter of the Ottoman Court in Costantinople, drew up his last will testament. Through his wishes, it is possible to analyse his profile not only as an artist, but also as a father, brother and as a friend, reconstructing in this way the origin of what, actually, from a personal gallery has become during the years a real private collection hinged today to the family Zonaro-Meneguzzer-Trevigne. The collector's profile we usually look for is the encyclopaedic spirit and above all, the unity which, in the latter case and only in appearance, is far from a collection created without a precise intention. Through the assumptions and developments of this collection, conventionally represented by the last will and the subsequent events, it is possible to seize in it an important biographical value, that marks out the events, the characteristics and the identities not only of Fausto Zonaro and his family, but even of a world between East and West has been to create new figures of artists, capable of summarizing tradition and experimentation with new languages.
