Abstract

Il contributo intende analizzare due modalità di analisi e interpretazione della poesia, il new criticism e il new historicism, che pur diverse nel background pratico e ideologico della loro impostazione, sono state accademicamente egemoni per gran parte del secolo scorso, orientando in modo forte il consenso teorico e le politiche d’insegnamento, soprattutto in ambito angloamericano. A questo scopo, si ripercorrono diacronicamente le analisi testuali o le interpretazioni che critici di orientamenti diversi hanno offerto di un componimento di John Donne, The Canonization, diventato nel tempo uno dei più significativi terreni di scontro per l'opposizione e l'elaborazione delle nuove proposte teoriche.
