New Transnational Literary Histories on the World Scene

  • Remo Ceserani
Keywords: Literary History, National entity, Supranational entity, European countries, American continent

Abstract

A discussion on the increasingly problematic relationship between history of literature and national identity. The essay, after a quick examination of some recent histories that continue to privilege the national and literary dimension of the matter under consideration, engages on a more detailed analysis of a number of interesting new histories, which concentrate on the cultural and literary production of wider geographic zones. These works, instead of the traditional exclusive treatment of single countries and nations and their political, cultural, and linguistic identities, take as their subject larger areas, such as the countries of East-Central Europe or the entire Iberian Peninsula or whole continents as North or South America. Among the texts examined: Storia della letteratura ungherese, edited by B. Ventavoli (2002-2004), Storia della letteratura polacca, edited by L. Marinelli (2004), Geografia e storia della civiltà letteraria rumena nel contesto europeo, edited by B. Mazzoni and A. Tarantino (2010), History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe, edited by M. Cornis-Pope and J. Neubauer (2004-2010), New History of German Literature, edited by D. E. Wellbery and J. Ryan (2004), New History of French Literature, edited by D. Hollier (1998), Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula, edited by F. Cabo Aseguinolaza, A. Abuín Gonzales and C. Domínguez (2010), New Literary History of America, edited by G. Marcus and W. Sollors (2009), and Literary Cultures of Latin America, edited by M. Valdés and D. Kadir (2004).
