The Psychoanalytic Concept of Attention
Freud's Implicit Dialogue with 19th Century Experimental Psychology
Abstract
Our aim in this article is to carry out a preliminary study of the lines of continuity between the psychoanalytic model of attention as conceived by Freud and the concept of attention in experimental psychology in the last two decades of the nineteenth century. To do this, we will work from Théodule Ribot’s La psychologie de l'attention, published in its first edition in 1889. The aim of this work is to provide a broad synthesis of the clinical and experimental knowledge developed by the scientific tradition of the time. Secondly, we will attempt to isolate the concept of attention from a selection of Freud’s metapsychological works. Finally, we will make some initial considerations about the implicit dialogue between psychoanalysis and the scientific psychology that made up the conceptual landscape of the time.
