Revista da Semana: 1918, The Epidemic and Photographic Representations
Abstract
The present article intends, based on the photographs about the arrival of the Spanish Flu epidemic in the months of September to November 1918 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to interpret which were the tools of photographic language used to portray and present the event in the illustrated magazine Revista da Semana and, thus, try to understand which discursive intentions can be traced from such an organization of language. The choice of such periodical is justified because it is a representative of the bourgeois ideology in force in a context of urban modernization, republican and cosmopolitan of the then Brazilian capital. To this end, five issues of the magazine published between 26 October and 23 November 1918 will be analysed, the period when the disease raged with greater intensity in the city and was the object of the printed publication. The notions of Dialogism and Analytical Deconstruction, as well as the tool of Semiotic-historical fundamental theoretical-methodological analysis.
