The ‘Red Indian’ Palestinian of Mahmud Darwish in Eleven stars by the end of Andalusian scene
Abstract
This article analyses some chosen verses of Mahmoud Darwish with the aim of highlighting the notion of indigeneity that Palestinians embrace as a means of struggle for their rights and in defence of their land. Some expressions such as “here” or “this place” used by Darwish point to the deep sense of belonging that Palestinians feel for the land. A special focus is put on the “Speech of the Red Indian”, a clear metaphor of the Palestinians’ condition, which is part of a collection of poems whose title is equally metaphorical: “Eleven Planets at the end of the Andalusian scene” is in fact a comparison between the collapse of the Andalusian civilization and the Palestinian Catastrophe.
