Abstract

Gli Stati Uniti ebbero origine da un viaggio e da allora la mobilità geografica, sociale, culturale è un aspetto che contraddistingue questo paese. È noto come la letteratura, la musica, il cinema e la fotografia abbiano espresso con un particolare eclettismo ed intensità l’”on the road” e l’immagine della strada. Sorprendentemente, questo tema è molto meno rappresentato in pittura. Edward Hopper, Stuart Davis, Alfred Leslie, Edward Ruscha costituiscono un’eccezione a questo fenomeno.

The United States of America began with a journey. Since then, the road and “the on-the-road” has been a persistent theme
of the United States culture, an emblem of the country and of its extraordinary history of geographical and social mobility. A literary
tradition of novels and stories, movies, songs and photographic images represented the road, yet very few are the artists who developed the theme in painting. Edward Hopper, Stuart Davis, Alfred Leslie, Edward Ruscha are, among a few others, some luminous exceptions.
