Notes of aymara ethnography
Abstract
This is an Italian and Spanish translation of Alfred Métraux’s “Notes of aymara ethnography”, originally published in French in the Journal de la Société des Américanistes in 1954. The text is the first of a series of short articles related to a research the author conducted for the United Nations in the Peruvian and Bolivian Andes in the 50s, notably focusing on aymara and quechua internal migrations. Among other things, Métraux describes how new traditional authorities are appointed on New Year’s Day in Yunguyo, Peru. He also records funerary and agricultural rituals, and the pilgrimage celebrating the Virgin of Copacabana, Bolivia. He finally offers the transcription of an aymara petition filed in the United Nations section in Bolivia.
