Abstract

This commentary discusses the shift to austerity in the University of Wisconsin System, in the context of Wisconsin’s urban, public doctoral research university in the city of Milwaukee. Critical discourses based on “the Wisconsin Idea” insist upon the necessity for both academic freedom and public support to higher education.
