Ethical Hospitality, Linguistic Hospitality

  • Gonçalo Marcelo

Abstract

Taking the reflections of Jacques Derrida, Paul Ricoeur and Richard Kearney as its starting point, this paper explores the problem of hos-pitality in its connection with translation. First, it delves on the anal-yses of hospitality put forward by Derrida and Ricoeur, showing how the ricœurian approach results in a connection between linguistic hospitality and ethical hospitality. Then, in what it dubs the “work” of hospitality, it focuses on the work put forward by Richard Kearney in the context of the Guestbook project to foster the transition from the impossible to the possible, from hostility to hospitality.
