Abstract

The reception of the foreigner is a challenge that unfolds in several dimensions. Within this epistemological myriad, this study penetrates the philosophical spectrum by focusing on the ethical challenge of welcoming the refugee and cultural identities. Its itinerary starts from cosmopolitanism, as a concept and as a political project, to consolidate the figure of the world citizen and the idea of the right to hospitality. Subsequently, the paper analyzes the multiple dimensions of hospitality presented by Derrida, which removes legal-political issues and condenses the debate in ethical philosophy. Finally, Taylor's multiculturalism presents itself as a basis for re-reading Western identity and stereotypes about refugees, which leads to the hypothesis that, despite the complexities of refugee protection, the imperative of otherness creates possibilities for harmonizing singularities aiming at living together
