The serpent and the Madonna: Senses, practices and soundscapes in a vodou site: Saut d’Eau, Haiti
Abstract
This article analyses the link between senses, practice and soundscape in relation to Sodo, the site of a national vodou pilgrimage in the countryside of Haiti. Starting from soundscapes studies (Schafer 1977) as theoretical point of view to analyse the interaction between sound and peoples in a specific place, this essay tells the interaction among environmental sounds, recorded music and live performance. In particular, this research investigates the micro level of situated listening, that is, how the social actors pay attention to environmental sounds in which they are located in relationship to their social, cultural, and religious practice.
